AIDS WALK WISCONSIN —
Shannon from the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin (ARCW) will be on-hand this Sunday from 5:30 to 7:30 to register folks for AIDS Walk on Sept. 19. Please join your teammates and league-mates and walk with us (I hear some people have decided to wear their MGVA shirts as they walk the course!). You can also register on our team at: http://www.aidswalkwis.org/site/TR/Events/General?team_id=10413&pg=team&fr_id=1100. You are not required to raise pledges, so sign up to walk with us and show your support!
MGVA POTLUCK — Sunday, Sept. 12 • 3 to 5 p.m.
Have you been testing out your recipes so you have a delectable dish to pass?
Don't forget — this potluck event is also where we will count up everyone's "Red Card" punches to determine the amount we will donate to AIDS Walk. Each punch = 25 cents to help fight AIDS!
DONATION JARS —
Our cup overfloweth! We have been getting steady contributions to the Swearing & Serving in the Net Jar. We sure are good at making lemonade out of lemons! If you have been writing out IOUs, don't forget to bring your change this weekend — plus a little extra in case you need it for this weekend's match!
FEEDBACK —
As always you can leave comments at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KRPMVMW (the link can also be found on our website, under the “About Us” tab) or talk directly with any board member. Give us a pat on the back or a suggestion about anything we can do to make MGVA a better league!
REFS —
At this point in the season, we want to give a huge hand to those participants who are doing double duty by helping out refereeing games, too. It sometimes can be a thankless task, but it's nice we have as many people who are willing to make calls and help our matches run smoothly. Players: Remember that most of our refs are new at this and are not expected to be perfect — just consistent. Refs: Keep doing what you're doing — we all appreciate you!
AND FINALLY —
CONGRATULATIONS to Milwaukee Team 1 (consisting of Garett K., Joe W., Chris T., Jonathan C. and Kayla) who took third place in the Madison Pride Tournament last weekend! Way to represent!
August 15th

• POTLUCK: MGVA will be hosting a Potluck on September 12th. We ask that you bring a dish to pass. Mark your calendars! More details to follow…
• Volleybar Punch Card: We have determined that the punch card will from now on be referred to as the RED card.
o We’ve started collecting prizes for the RED Card! So far, they include things like a massage (with no happy endings, but we are taking volunteers), booze from Kruz and hotel stays. Do you or your company have something that you would like to contribute? PLEASE let a board member know!
o In addition to the prizes you can receive, MGVA will also be donating $0.25 to ARCW for each punch on your Red card! At our potluck, Jim L. will tally up ALL the puches to date!
• Swear/Net Serve Jar: Do you have a charity that is dear to your heart? Submit their name for voting consideration (to a board member). The MGVA Community will be asked to vote on a few very deserving organizations. The first place organization will receive 60% of the funds in the jars, and the 2nd place organization will receive 40% of the jars. Some organizations we have listed are Project Q, ARCW, LGBT Community Center, Boys & Girls Club, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Best D Clinic, Diverse & Resilient, PrideFest, and the Gay Arts Center.
• Tshirts: will be available for purchase on Sunday!!! We added a new color – light blue!
• Garbage: The courts and outside area looked AWESOME this week! Well Done!!
• Team pics: have been posted to the website! If your team hasn’t had their picture taken yet,
please see Eric Euting this week before your game.
That’s all I have this week.

August 8th Notes
Greetings!
A few notes for play this week:
- Volleybar – This weeks Volleybar is at This Is It. They are a new sponsor this season. So please stop out! SPECIALS: 2 for 1 rail mixers from 3 to 8 and 2 for 1 shots from 10 to close!
Directions from Beulah to This Is It:
Head back to Kinnickinnic
Go Right on Kinnickinnic
Right on Pittsburgh
Left on Milwaukee
Right on Wells
This Is It is on the LEFT
- Food Drives – We believe one of the strengths of our league is the camaraderie and support among our players -- and we're seeking to harness that for the good of the community beyond us. As an inaugural yet simple community service project, MGVA is asking all players to consider bringing one or two (or more) non-perishable food items to your match at Beulah this Sunday and next, and the board will box up your generous donations and transport them to a worthwhile cause. This is an easy way we can help fill a direct and immediate need for help -- and will be the first of many ways throughout the year we will get involved and spread the good vibes of MGVA throughout the community.
Last week we told you about the Jewish Community Center, which suffered great loss during the storms two weeks ago. The JCC food pantry building was severely damaged by more than four feet of water, and all contents of the pantry were lost. Our first effort was going to support restocking their shelves; however, we have learned that the JCC is still seeking storage space for donations they might receive. The staff there has asked if we could delay our food drive for them for a few weeks.
So, we will do our first collection this week for the food pantry at the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin. ARCW distributes food throughout the state to more than 1,400 people with HIV and their families. A quarter of that food is delivered directly to people who are homebound or unable to travel to an ARCW site. In Milwaukee alone, 600 people receive food from the ARCW food pantry every month.
We hope you will join your teammates and league-mates in doing what you can to help!
- Garbage – Players have been doing an excellent job keeping our courts clean. Now, we need to relay that message to our spectators. Please also remember to throw your cigarette butts in the garbage after you put them out. Not only do we as citizens want to keep our city clean, but when members and supporters litter, it makes us all look bad. So please, let’s keep it clean!
- Schedule and ref schedule: The schedule and this weeks ref schedule have been posted on our website. The remainder of the ref schedule will be posted by early next week. Remember, please check the schedule carefully to see if you have a double header. REFS: If for any reason you are unable to commit to your scheduled day, please speak to Ryan (ryan.cronwell@gmail.com) immediately so he can find a substitute.
- Swear jar/net serves – New this Sunday! This will encourage our members to improve their skills and clean up their language. This policy will be team enforced. Charitable organization TBD.
- Skills Clinic – 4-5pm on Sunday INDOORS. Please bring appropriate gym attire (shoes). This weeks topic: All skilz refresher, hitting-approach and using your tools!
Thanks!
Marie

• Divisions aren’t set yet due to an odd amount of teams and almost all teams registering “competitive”. To make things fair, the first 3 weeks will be seed play. Then we will split into divisions. These games will not count as part of your overall record. The games are self-refereeing. Schedule for the first 3 weeks can be found under the SCHEDULE tab on this website. PLEASE READ IT CAREFULLY AS THERE ARE A FEW DOUBLE HEADERS.

• Please come early to your game. You will need to pay your dues and if you haven’t played with us before, sign your waiver. Dues are $30; $20 for students with a valid student ID. Bring cash or check. Make checks payable to Milwaukee Gay Volleyball Association or MGVA. Remember, you will not be allowed to play if you haven’t paid.
• There will be a captains meeting 5 minutes before each set of games.
• We are looking for refs! There will be a referee clinic at 4pm on 7/18. This clinic will last approximately one hour. Please let Ryan know if you are interested.

Madison Red Day Event – CANCELLED
Folks,
With deep regret and sadness, I am informing you that we must cancel the Red Day Tournament and Fundraiser on July 17th due to several reasons.
Though the July 17th event is canceled, the board is still intending on doing the following, either as separate events, or bundled together.
1) Hold a summer 'party' for the league, our friends, and supporters.
2) Hold some kind of benefit or fundraiser to support a)our members in the ACT Ride and/or b) AIDS Network directly
3) Hold an tournament open to members, non-members, Madison, as well as other cities.
The board will be having a brief meeting this Sunday at 2pm at Badger Bowl.
If you have any suggestions, comments or opinions to be brought up, please email me and I will bring them for discussion. As always, our board meetings are open to all members to attend.
Thank you and again, we apologize for the cancellation and any inconvenience this may have brought.
